You should know that an idea by itself is not patentable. That idea must be transformed into a product or service that is beneficial to society. There should be some uniqueness to the invention to warrant consideration for patent grant.
Criteria for Applying for a Patent
In order for your invention to be considered for patent application, it must meet one of the following criteria or categories:
1. Process or method, including software. Consider the following:
- Conventional processes. Examples of this includes heat treatments, chemical reactions for creating or modifying something, methods of manufacturing products or chemicals
- Software processes includes algorithms
- Internet Business Methods (We do not handle these types of patents. It is a long shot)
2. Machine Patents
- Conventional machines such as robots, telephones, sewage treatment plant
- Software machines
3. Manufacturing
- Articles made by a person or machine
4. Composition of Matter
- Items such as chemical compositions
- Chemically significant substances that are usually supplied in bulk, liquid, or gaseous forms
